That's the way it's supposed to be!

Your Little Butterfly

Sometimes I'm like a butterfly -
I flutter to and fro.
I just can't seem to be content -
I'm always on the go.

I can't stay still in my cocoon.
I'm struggling to be free.
I want to please you every day.
But I can't hide from me!

I guess I have a lot to learn,
Just need to try my wings.
And as I flutter all about
I'm learning many things.

This time I have a purpose, though.
I'm fluttering your way
Because I want to wish to you,
A Happy Mother's Day!
Mom's Recipe for Love

Take a cup or two of laughter,
and a pinch of good advice.
Pour in patience by the bowlful,
And then stir it once or twice.

Fold in lots of hugs and kisses,
and a mother's gentle care.
Then cook it 'til it's nice and warm,
and spread it everywhere.

** Poem for floral gifts! **

You Take Care of Me

You take care of me,
like a tender young plant.
You give me good roots.
You feed me.
You give me water each day.
You let me out into the sunshine.
When I go to places, you make sure it's
the right environment for me to grow.
You weed out the bad things.
Someday I will grow strong
and blossom into an adult.
Thank you for nurturing me!

Angels in Disguise
Reginald Holmes

There is a sweet, angelic look
In every mother's eyes
that makes us stop and wonder
if they're angels in disguise;

For they are always standing by
when someone needs a friend.
No one has as much compassion;
None are quicker to defend.

There is a little bit of God
in every mother's heart.
He molded them of finer clay
that sets them well apart.
They are an earthly blessing
that heaven itself supplies;
And so we can't help believing
they are angels in disguise!

Mother's Wages
- Starlette L. Howard

She is paid in dandelions, crayoned art,
and plaster hand prints.
She is also paid in the sounds of small voices
in prayer, song, and laughter.

A mother isn't paid by the hour or the mile;
She fills her heart with a kiss and a smile.
She can find wealth in clean little faces,
in hugs and in curls, in denims and laces.
She is paid with the sights of little-sized joys.

A mother isn't paid by the hour of the mile;
She fills her heart with a kiss and a smile.

:Gifts For Mom:

* Many ideas compiled from KinderKorner mailring *

Mother's Day Thumbprint Card and Booklet

On the cover, I use a poem found in May's Teacher Education Thematic Book. We make flowers using thumbprints and use markers to make embellishments for cover decoration. On the inside I have children answer questions about their moms. They also draw a picture of themselves with their mom doing something they enjoy doing together.

My mom is the most wonderful mom in the world!
My mom's name is ____________.
My mom has has _______ hair and ________ eyes.
She is ____ feet tall and weighs ______ pounds.
My mom likes to eat _____________.
My mom is happy when ____________.
But I know she is really angry when _____________.
My mom's favorite tv show is _________________.
My mom is smart. She knows all about _____________.
If my mom would have one wish come true, it would be ______.
I love my mom because _____________________.
Love, ______________________

Soap Balls

Pour 2 cups Ivory Snow detergent (or flakes) into a bowl. Add water mixed with food coloring, mixing it in with hands, until the soap forms a ball. (Usually about 2 tablespoons does the job. Add more water if necessary. Form into balls. Wrap with plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon. Or, wrap in a washcloth, attach to a sponge, or any bath supplies to make a cute gift.
[Summarized from Mudworks, by MaryAnn Kohl]

Beaded Necklace

Have children use real beads to create a necklace for mom. String beads on fishing line.

Recipe Card Holder

Purchase 4" white tiles from Home Depot. Have children decorate the white tile with puffy paint and by writing captions on it such as "Happy Mother's Day" and signing their own name. When the tiles are dry, glue clothespins on the back of the tile, which will act as the stand for the frame, but also a clip for mom to keep her favorite recipe or notes.

Broaches

Purchase enough wooden craft shapes for each student to have one. These can be found at Michaels Craft Store. Have the students decorate the wooden shapes using sequins, buttons, shells, paint, etc. When the paint has dried, hot glue a pin on the back of the shape to create a beautiful pin!

A Special Gift

Wrap a small jewelry box and attach the following poem with a ribbon.

This is a very special gift,
That you can never see.
The reason it's so special,
It's just for you from me.

Whenever you are lonely,
Or ever feeling blue,
You only have to hold this gift
And know I think of you.

You never can unwrap it.
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close to your heart,
It's filled with LOVE inside.

Flower Magnets

Cut out a flower shape from various colors of craft foam using an Ellison die-cut (or trace your own flower pattern). Cut out a photo of the student to go in the center of the flower. Allow the student to decorate the flower using sequins, puffy paint, etc. If you have the die-cut flower with the center cut out, flue the photo to the back of the flower. Hot glue a magnet to the back.

Thumbprint Stationary

Give mom an assortment of stationary to use created uniquely by her child. Students will make their thumbprints around the border of the paper using the appropriate color ink. Use a Sharpie marker to add details for flowers, ladybugs, apples, caterpillars, and more!

Mother's Day Kisses

You will need 2 wrapped candy kisses, 1 plastic spoon, a 4x4 piece of netting, and ribbon. Place the two kisses back to back in the bowl of the spoon. Cover with the netting and tie with a small ribbon. To the ribbon's bow, attach the following poem:

Happy Mother's Day!
A spoonful of love
and a couple of wishes,
that you enjoy your
Mother's Day kisses!

Mother's Day Candle

Thoroughly clean a regular sized tuna fish can in the dishwasher. Give each child a can. Have the child pain on a good amount of tacky glue onto the sides of the can. Roll the can in colorful fish gravel (found at your local pet store) and allow to dry. Next, paint a thin layer of the glue onto the inside bottom of the tuna can and spring onto that some colored sand. Shake off the extra. Allow to dry. Purchase colorful votive candles and using a glue gun, secure the candle to the center inside of the tuna can. You now have a lovely votive candly holder. This is a simple, low cost give that also teaches the children about recycling.
- This idea came from Mrs. Bee's Busy Classroom

"Stained-Glass" Candle

Cut tissue paper into small pieces and glue on to baby food jars. (Use a glue/water mix and you can paint it on with a water color brush.) First paint the jar with the mixture and place the tissue paper on. Then, after that has dried, paint over the tissue paper with the same mix. Put a tea light inside and you have a beautiful faux stained-glass candle.

Flower Pots

You will need: small clay pot, acrylic paint, flower cut out of craft foam, glue, craft sticks, picture of each child, moss, foam brick.

Let children pain their flower pot. Have children glue their flower on craft sticks. Take the child's picutre and cut their face out and glue on one of the flowers. Put a piece of foam brick in the bottom of the pot. Add moss. Stick 3 or 4 flowers in the pot.

Mother's Day Placemat

1. Spread newspaper over your work area. Place a large, placemat-size paper doily on the newspaper.
2. Pour at least three colors of washable paint into foam trays. Make flower stems by dipping four fingers in paint and then spreading them apart and pressing down in the middle of the placemat.
Dip your thumb in another color paint and press at least four times around the top of each stem to create flower petals. Make flower centers with a single painted finger. Let dry.
Draw a flower pot on construction paper with markers. Write your Mother's Day message on the flower pot. Then cut the flower pot out.
Glue the flowerpot to the doily and laminate for usage.

You're My "Cup of Tea!"

Trace a cup out of wallpaper or other decorative paper. Have the children cut it out and glue (only around the edges) onto a fancy paper doily. Insert a tea bag with the string hanging out and write "Mom, You're Just My Cup of Tea!"
- Rhonda Yeager

Teapot Card

Trace and cut out a teapot pattern on the fold of a 9x12 piece of bright construction paper to create a teapot card. Cut out the center of the top of the card so that you can place a photo of the child. Children can decorate the cover and add "Happy Mother's Day." On the inside, children can glue a copy of the following poem:
Here is a gift for Mother's Day
I'll try my best in every way.
But when you get upset with me,
Relax and have a cup of tea!

Add two tea bags in snack size ziploc bags on the inside of the card.
- My son gave me this for Mother's Day when he was in PreK.

Laundry Scoop Flower Carts

You will need: laundry scoops, large buttons, potting soil, zinnia or marigold seeds, small ribbon, glue gun.

Cut a "v" shape into the laundry scoop handle to resemble two handles for a wheelbarrow. Hot glue two large buttons to the sides of the scoop for wheels. Fill the scoop with potting soil and plant zinnia or marigold seeds (about 5 or 6). Tie the ribbon around the handle of the wheelbarrow.

- This is a combination of several different versions of this idea!

Soda Bottle Terrariums

Cut a 20 oz. soda bottle in half width-wise. Use paint pens to decorate the outside of the bottle. Fill the base of the bottle with potting soil. Add bachelor button seeds about 3 weeks before Mother's Day.

Coffee Filter Butterfly Magnets

You will need: 1 coffee filter, 1 12" pipe cleaner, various colors of paint, 1 magnet strip (per child)

Directions:
1. Flatten your coffee filter, then decorate it by dipping your thumb into different colors of paint and stamping thumbprints. Put the filter aside and let it dry completely.
2. Bend your pipe cleaner in the middle to make a V. Lay it down and loosely gather the coffee filter inside the V.
3. Flatten the pipe cleaner; then twist the ends together about halfway up to make the body and the antennae. Straighten the gathers to even out the wings.
4. Glue the magnet to the back of your butterfly.
