"The Scarecrow"

The old scarecrow is such a funny man.
He flops in the wind as hard as he can.
He flops to the right.
He flops to the left.
He flops back and forth
Till he's most out of breath.
His arms swing out; his legs swing, too.
He nods his head in a How-do-you-do?
See him flippity flop when the wind blows hard,
The funny scarecrow in our backyard.

Have You Ever Seen A Scarecrow?
[ tune: "Have You Ever Seen A Lassie?" ]

Have you ever seen a scarecrow,
A scarecrow, a scarecrow?
Have you ever seen a scarecrow
With ten hungry birds?
Ten birds, ten birds,
Ten wing-flapping birds.
Have you ever seen a scarecrow
With ten hungry birds

Have you ever seen a scarecrow,
a scarecrow, a scarecrow?
Have you ever seen a scarecrow
Scare one bird away?
One bird, one bird
one wing-flapping bird.
Have you ever seen a scarecrow
with nine hungry birds?

Have children act out the song by using carson dellosa scarecrow notepad cutouts. Add these to craft sticks to be the scarecrow. Have the scarecrows strike a pose in front of the class. Choose other children to be the appropriate number of crows using scarecrow cutouts. As you sing the 4th line of the song, encourage the birds to flap around the scarecrow. As you sing the second verse, have the scarecrow "scare" one of the birds away. Repeat the second verse (replacing the boldfaced number word with the appropriate number word) until all of the birds have been scared away.

The Floppy Scarecrow

The floppy, floppy scarecrow
Guards his field all day.
He waves his floppy, floppy hands
To scare the crows away!

Repeat the poem, replacing the boldfaced body-part word with each of the following in turn: arms, elbows, head, legs, kneeds, feet, ankles, toes ... any others?!

Scarecrow, Scarecrow
[tune: Twinkle, Twinkle]

Scarecrow, scarecrow, turn around.
Scarecrow, scarecrow, touch the ground.
Stand up tall and blink your eyes.
Raise your hands, then tap your knees.
Turn around and tap your feet.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, touch your toes.
Scarecrow, scarecrow, tap your nose.
Swing your arms so very slow,
Now real fast to scare the crows!
Touch your head, jump up and down.
Now sit down without a sound.

From KinderKorner

Scarecrow, scarecrow,
How scary can you be?
You scared (__________)
But you didn't scare me!

From Kinder Korner

I'm a Little Scarecrow
[tune: "I'm a Little Teapot"]

I'm a little scarecrow
Stuffed with hay.
Here I stand in a field all day.
When I see the crows,
I like to shout,
"Hey! You crows, you better get out!"

: Reading :

After reading Barn Dance! by Bill Martin, Jr., scatter a little hay and mess up your classroom just a bit for the Kindergarten kids to find the next morning. Ask the class what they think the scarecrow did in the classroom that night and have them make up stories about the details!

Harvest Pals listening activity. Children will follow the oral directions to complete the harvest picture. (Reinforces listening skills as well as color recognition.)[The Mailbox, Primary, Oct/Nov 1989]

Scarecrow Colors booklet. Assemble the 8 pages to show the parts of a scarecrow (focusing on the color of each item).

Do a KWL about scarecrows. Before the unit begins, Complete the What We Know and the What We Want To Know portions about Scarecrows. Write the information given by the children onto fall-type patterns. After reading the scarecrow stories, have children dictate information for the What We Learned portion of the KWL.

Read Jeb Scarecrow's Pumpkin Patch by Jana Dillon. The story provides an imaginary glimpse into one very dedicated little scarecrow's Halloween season. Read the story aloud to the class and stop when you finish reading page 18. At this point, have each child imagine that he is a scarecrow in the same predicament as Jeb. Ask each child to share how he would stop the crows from destroying the pumpkins that are under his care. Have each child write and illustrate his idea on a large sheet of paper. Compile them for a class book.

How to Make a Scarecrow

Children make a book about making scarecrows using this reproducible pattern from Scholastic's book: 15 Reproducible Write-and-Read Books.

Students sequence the words of the story and find the correct picture that describes the words. They will complete the picture details.

We made a scarecrow. This is how we did it. First, we put on an old skirt and shirt.
Next, we made a face.
Then we put on a hat. We added some gloves, too.
Finally, we tied on strips of cloth for streamers.

: Science :

Using scarecrow patterns found in Carson Dellosa's Scarecrows & Pumpkins Thematic Unit, reproduce a set of scarecrow cards. Each card shows a scarecrow pointing to a different part of his body. In a small group, each child turns a card over and names the part of the body the scarecrow is touching. The child then imitates the scarecrows position.

Mr. Scarecrow homework activity. Send home this scarecrow worksheet for your children to practice recognizing parts of the body. (Mailbox, Oct/Nov 1987)

: Games :

Make a spinner board game. The spinner has the various parts of the scarecrow's body on it. (head, legs, shirt, arms, ) Color, cut and laminate several copies of the game pieces represented on the spinner. In a small group setting have children spin, one at a time. As the spinner lands on a specific body part, the child names the body part and picks it from the pile of body parts. Each child continues with his turn until he has "built his scarecrow." You might want to copy each scarecrow on a different color of construction paper and assign each student to a specific color.

Using patterns from Carson Dellosa's Pumpkins & Scarecrows Thematic Unit, reproduce a set of scarecrow cards. The scarecrow cards show various partner actions such as elbow-to-elbow, knee-to-knee, and feet-to-feet. Assign each child a partner. Show each pair of children a card and have them imitate it.

Make a large scarecrow pattern. Attach the scarecrow head to the wall. Give each child a nose with a piece of tape on the back. Have each child close his eyes and let them place the nose on the scarecrow.
