Songs & Poems:

I'm a Little Penguin

[tune: "I'm A Little Teapot"]

I'm a little penguin.

Look at me,

Fishing and swimming

In the deep blue sea.

My wings are black

And my tail is white.

And I like sliding down the snow so bright!

Peter Penguin

[tune: "On Top of Old Smokey"]

Meet Peter the Penguin.

He munches on P's.

If he eats the wrong food,

It might make him sneeze.

He likes popcorn and pizza

And pineapple, too.

What will you serve him
If he eats with you?

** This turns out really cute and is a fun skill builder! ** For a homework activity - I type the song on a sheet of paper. I draw a plate on the right-hand side of the paper. I add penguin clipart at the top to represent "Penguin Pete." I have children draw all the foods beginning with Pp to serve for Peter the Penguin if he should come to dinner at their house. We try to see how many different foods we can come up with!

Little Penguin

[tune: "I'm A Little Teapot"]

I'm a little penguin back and white

Short and wobbly, an adorable sight.

I can't fly at all, but I love to swim

So I waddle to the water and dive right in!!
Up on the Iceberg

[tune: "Up on the Housetop"]

Into the ocean, penguins go.

They spy seal way down below.

Zip through the water with no delay,

Zigzagging penguins swim away.

Oh, oh, oh! Go penguins, go!

Oh, oh, oh! Go penguins, go!

Leap to the iceberg, quick, quick, quick!

Back to creche to feed your chick!

Penguin Parade

Waddle, waddle, waddle

From side to side

Penguins go a-walking

Slip, slip, slide, slide.

With a funny jump

The penguins dash

Down to the water

Splash! Splash! Splash! Splash!

Waddle from the water

With a rock 'n roll

Penguins go parading

On a wintry stroll.
All The Penguins

[tune: "Clementine"]

[from www.songs4teachers.com

They are playing on an ice patch,

They are jumping in the sea.

All the penguins are together,

Having fun so playfully!

There are big ones, there are small ones,

And then some are in between.

But they're having fun together,

Where the air is cold and clean.

When they walk they kind of waddle,

Back and forth from side to side,

Playing in the cold Antarctic,

They would never come inside!

It is in that cold Antarctic,

That's the land that they call home.

Full of snow and icy water,

From that cold they will not roam!

Five Little Penguins

Five little penguins sitting on the ice.

The first one said, "Oh I feel nice."

The second one said, "I see a little chick!"

The third one said, "Oh, hide it quick."

The fourth one said, "Let's go for a swim."

The fifth one said, "Now we all dive in."

So they dove in the water, and they swam all about.

Then the five little penguins, all jumped out.
The Penguin

I am a bird you know quite well,

All dressed in black and white.

And even though I do have wings

They're not designed for flight.

I waddle, waddle, waddle,

On my funny little feet.

Across the icy snow I go

To find a fishy treat!

Frosted Penguin Shapes
Trace and cut out various penguin shapes from black paper. Paint with Epsom Salts diluted in water. It makes the penguin look frosty.

Skating Penguins
Use the skating penguin pattern found at http://www.angelfire.com/mn/cozycottage/pskate.html to make penguin skating scenes. Have children color and cut out the penguin and then glue the penguin to the upper half of a large sheet of blue construction paper. use chalk at the bottom to create the ice the penguin will skate on.

Paper Plate Penguin
1. Use 1 regular size paper plate for the tummy.

2. Use a small paper plate to trace a black construction paper head.

3. Cut a moon-shape on the fold of 2 sheets of black construction paper to create the penguin "wings"

4. Add an orange triangle for a beak

5. Add wiggle eyes on the small paper plate for penguin eyes.

Counting Penguins

[Center Game]

Englarge a penguin pattern and an egg pattern. Make ten copies of each on construction paper. Color, cut out, and then laminate them. Program each of the penguins with a different numeral. Use sticky dots to make a dot set on each egg to correspond with one of the numerals. Direct students to match each penguin with its egg.

Tacky's Patterns worksheet.

[Teacher's Helper, K, Nov/Dec/Jan 99-00]

Have the class vote on their favorite penguin story read. Discuss the results.

Langugage Arts / Reading:

A Tacky Race

After reading Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester, have a "Tacky Race!" Divide the class into two teams and line them up on one side of the room. One the other side of the room, assemble tacky outfits including a shirt, pants, socks, and a hat. Designate an outfit for each team. On your signal, the first player on each team runs to his pile of clohtes, dresses, run back to the team, and undresses. Then the next player dresses, runs to the other side of the room, undresses, and runs back to the team. Play continues until everyone has had a turn to be tacky. Ready, set, go!

Dress Peter Penguin

Dress the penguin cutout correctly by matching the hat and scarf. Hats and scarves are programmed with whatever skill you wish to use. I use upper and lowercase letters.

Slip Sliding Away

You'll need a large plan of frozen water, small items from the classroom such as blocks, crayons, and pencil. Talk about where penguins live and the type of climate they need to survive. Show children the pan filled with ice. Let them try to move the blocks and other small items around on the ice so they can feel the cold the penguins need to survive. Slide the items across the ice then across the desk, carpet and other surfaces. Compare the results.
